Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Senior South Korean actor, Lee Sun-kyun, is suspected of having died due to suicide by inhaling the smoke of charcoal briquettes burned in a car, Wednesday (27/12/2023).
According to the police report, the film actor Parasites was found inhaling smoke from burning charcoal briquettes in Waryong Park, Jongno-gu, Seoul, after being reported missing from home after leaving a will. When found, Lee Sun-kyun was already unconscious.
So, what were the charcoal briquettes that Lee Sun-kyun used to end his life?

Reporting from the Los Angeles Times, the Los Angeles (LA) Department of Health said that burning charcoal briquettes in closed areas or in rooms with poor ventilation can cause fatal carbon monoxide poisoning.
Based on a federal study from 1979 to 1986, as many as 83 deaths in the United States (US) occurred due to briquette smoke concentrated or trapped in closed areas. Most cases start from burning charcoal briquettes in a tent or house.
Symptoms of charcoal briquette poisoning
According to the same report, the symptoms that generally appear when charcoal briquette poisoning begins are headache, confusion, dizziness, nausea and loss of consciousness.
According to published studies The Medical Journal of Australia as of 2012, carbon monoxide produced by charcoal briquettes is a colorless, odorless, non-irritating gas “with no warning properties”.
“Small amounts of burning charcoal briquettes can produce carbon monoxide in amounts that are toxic, aka deadly,” wrote study author Chris Winder, quoted Friday (29/12/2023).
