Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Recently, the cost of the Single Tuition Fee (UKT) at universities in Indonesia has become a hot topic of discussion. Some people consider the latest UKT to be burdensome because its benefits are too high, especially for attending top state universities (PTN).
It turns out that tuition fees at top international campuses like Harvard also require high costs. According to the campus website, tuition fees for the 2024/2025 academic year at Harvard are US$ 56,550 or equivalent to IDR 905.4 million (Exchange rate IDR 16,011) per year.
This figure does not include additional costs such as housing or accommodation, food and student services. If added up, the total that students have to pay plus attendance fees can reach IDR 1.3 billion per year.
However, more than 55% of Harvard undergraduate students receive institutional scholarships and 24% of Harvard students pay no fees after receiving aid and grants, according to CNBC International.
In fact, it is not only limited to students, Harvard's aid system also implements an aid policy that is 100% based on need. This means they are committed to providing all the financial assistance a family needs.
Families who earn less than IDR 1.3 billion per year are not expected to contribute any money towards student attendance costs. This means there is relief for some students.
Please note, this financial assistance does not come directly from the school. About 19% of undergraduate students typically receive federal Pell Grants, or federal grant programs offered to undergraduate students.
Usually, students who receive this assistance only need to pay tuition fees on average of USD 19,500 or the equivalent of IDR 312 million per year.
