Now, urban farming not only provides healthy local food, but also provides significant economic potential for urban communities. This is also felt by residents in Sungai Pangeran Village, Palembang, who have successfully transformed abandoned land into productive green land.
“Starting from an illegal TPS which caused environmental pollution, it became a green area which is an innovative and educational step to create a greener and healthier environment,” said Yusraenati, Chair of the Dasawisma Pisang Group, RT 17 Sungai Pangeran Subdistrict, Palembang in a written statement, quoted on Thursday (23/5/2024).
The initiative carried out by the Dasawisma Pisang Group cannot be separated from BRI's assistance through the program Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) BRI Cares about Farming in the City of 'BRInita'. In this program, BRI provides various facilities and infrastructure assistance Urban Farming for the Dasawisma Pisang Group, numbering 16 people.
Apart from infrastructure assistance, the BRInita program also provides various assistance to increase the capacity and capability of the Dasawisma Pisang group, including training on how to plant hydroponically, training on fish cultivation, training on making eco-enzyme (POC), etc.
“We are happy to be able to receive training on how to grow crops using a hydroponic system and how to cultivate catfish properly and we already have positive activities here,” said Yusraenati.
Due to the initiatives carried out consistently by the Dasawisma Pisang Group, various benefits have begun to be felt for the community as a whole. Starting from economic benefits to preserving the surrounding environment. The reason is, the residential area which was previously the location for storing rubbish above the river no longer smells like rubbish and is also more comfortable. In this way, local residents' attraction to their environment will increase.
Apart from that, environmental productivity is increasing and providing ecological value for the residents of Sungai Pangeran. As a result, an area that was previously neglected has now become a means of education, recreation and relaxation for local residents.
In other words, the benefits of the BRInita program felt by the residents of Sungai Pangeran are the impact of living a life in balance with nature. Not only that, it also shows how maintaining ecosystem balance and using natural resources wisely can provide considerable benefits.
Urban farming which has been running since May 2023, starting with the construction of BRInita facilities and the provision of 200 catfish seeds for cultivation. The Dasawisma Banana group has also produced four harvests of vegetables (Brazilian spinach, bok choy, lettuce, shallots, mustard greens, chilies and kale), four harvests of catfish, and eight processed products.
The Dasawisma Banana group has also harvested vegetables from June to September 2023 amounting to 67.35 kilograms. Meanwhile, for the catfish harvest, the Dasawisma Pisang Group can harvest up to 35 kilograms. Apart from economic results, this program also encourages increased expertise for the Dasawisma Pisang Group in cultivating catfish and hydroponics.

Deputy Main Director of BRI Catur Budi Harto revealed that the BRInita program implemented by the Dasawisma Pisang Palembang Group, was in line with the objectives Sustainable Development Goals (SDG's) which is designed to maintain continuous improvement in the economic welfare of the community, maintain the social sustainability of the community, maintain the quality of the environment and inclusive development from generation to generation.
Directly, urban farming in Sungai Pangeran creates inclusive economic growth and increases the productivity of the agricultural and fisheries sectors on limited urban land and also creates productivity flows and sustainable consumption of processed hydroponic plants and fish cultivation.
Not only that, thanks to the strong collaboration between the Dasawisma Pisang Group and BRI Peduli BRInita, the former waste disposal area above the Prince River is being utilized to prevent environmental pollution and unlock potential. urban farming A productive BRinita was realized.
