Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Riches crazy rich the world disappearing overnight does not only happen in the present. Stories like this have also happened in the past.
One of them happened to Qarun bin Yashhar bin Qahits bin Lawi bin Ya'qub. He is a rich man or is now referred to as crazy rich the era of Prophet Musa whose wealth suddenly disappeared overnight.
What's the story?
Once upon a time, during the period of Prophet Musa's life around the 14th century BC, there was a very rich man named Qarun. Experts put forward several versions of how to build wealth.
Some said he was rich because he worked for Pharaoh. There are also those who say he received a miracle because he lived in poverty for a long time.
Regardless of which version is accurate, Qarun is definitely a very rich figure, even though it is not known exactly how much. One clue about his wealth is how Qarun stored all his assets in a warehouse where even a pile of keys required a number of strong people to lift them, as stated in the Koran, letter 28 verse 76.
Indonesian cleric Quraish Shihab in Tafsir Al-Misbah (2002) explains that God's guidance regarding Qarun's wealth is only the “key”. That is, not yet the contents of something that is locked. This means that his wealth is fantastic.
“As for his wealth, it is impossible for even a very large number of people to carry it,” wrote Quraish.
However, unlike other rich people who like to give charity, Qarun is the opposite. He was arrogant and stingy.
People repeatedly advised him, but he chose not to budge. Instead, he showed an arrogant attitude and tried to show that the wealth he had obtained was the result of his own hard work without anyone's help.
At the same time, he often showed off jewelry which, in Quraish Shihab's explanation, “dazzled the eyes of those who were weak in faith.” This jewelry, said Quraish, covers many things. Starting from followers, vehicles, clothes, and so on.
In the end, Qarun's action had to end very tragically. One day there was a landslide in the area where he lived. The landslide killed Qarun and drowned all his wealth.
At this point, the story of his life is just history: how someone's wealth disappeared overnight because of his arrogant attitude and showing off his wealth. From an archaeological perspective, Quraish Shihab said there was a place where Qarun's treasures were stored.
The location is on Lake Qarun, Fayyum city, Egypt. Until now, in Indonesian and Malay grammar, the name “Qarun” has been immortalized as 'treasure' to refer to treasure buried in the ground.
