Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Scientists have warned of the potential for climate change on Earth which is feared and could become a global disaster.
Launching Futurism, more than 15 thousand scientists from 161 countries revealed that a global disaster could occur at the end of this century. According to scientists, life on Earth is under threat as climate change accelerates.
“For decades, scientists have consistently warned of a future characterized by extreme climate conditions due to rising global temperatures caused by human activities that release dangerous greenhouse gases into the atmosphere,” wrote the paper published in Bioscience, quoted Friday (9/2 /2024).
Oregon State University (OSU) postdoctoral researcher and one of the study's lead authors, Christopher Wolf, revealed a number of Earth's potential futures, including the risk of catastrophic food and clean water shortages.
In the study, there was some surprising data. For example, in 2023, many climate records are broken with huge margarines.
One of the things the researchers refer to is related to Canada's very active forest fire season this year. The incident represents a tipping point towards a new fire regime.
One of the study authors, a distinguished professor of forestry at OSU, William Ripple, said there would be a worrying pattern in 2023, because humans have done little to make improvements.
“We also found little progress to report regarding humanity's efforts to combat climate change,” Ripple said in a statement.
However, this huge environmental impact is not just the fault of the fossil fuel industry. Apart from that, there is a government that subsidizes them, which is one of the causes of this effect.
Subsidies issued in the United States (US) in 2021-2022 have doubled, namely from US$531 trillion or around IDR 8.37 trillion to more than US$1 trillion or around IDR 15,775 trillion.
In order to prevent further disasters, researchers recommend switching away from fossil fuels. Apart from that, it also combats excessive consumption by rich people.
