Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Birth rates in Japan have fallen sharply after declining for 8 consecutive years. The local government says efforts need to be made to reverse the current conditions within the next 6 years to prevent a population crisis.
Throughout 2023, 758,631 babies will be born in Japan. That figure was down 5.1% from a year earlier, according to Japan's Ministry of Health and Welfare.
This figure is also the lowest since Japan began recording birth rates in 1899, quoted from The Guardian, Saturday (2/3/2024).
Apart from the birth rate, the marriage rate will also fall by 5.9% in 2023 to 489,281 couples. The lack of marriage rates is one of the key factors in the exponential decline in birth rates.
Surveys show that Japanese people's lack of interest in getting married is triggered by the sluggish job market prospects, the high cost of living, and work dynamics that are increasingly fast and not directly proportional to the salary earned.
The high work culture in Japan makes people feel that it is impossible to have a career while being married and being parents.
Japan's population currently stands at 125 million people. It is predicted that if the birth rate continues to decline, the population will decrease to 87 million in 2070.
Elon Musk also highlighted the population crisis in Japan. In his tweet on the X platform, the billionaire openly said that Japan would disappear from the face of the Earth.
“Japan will disappear if nothing changes,” he said, quoted from his personal X platform.
