Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Ice floes in Antarctica are melting faster than expected. The pace was faster than it would be in the following centuries.
Thwaites is a chunk of ice the size of Florida. This glacier is a buffer between the hot sea and the West Antarctic ice sheet.
The Thwaites glacier phenomenon was revealed in recent research led by the University of South Florida (USF). They researched with underwater drones to map the seabed, quoted from Science Alert, Thursday (29/2/2024).
The research found that the ice floes were melting much faster than before. It has been recorded that in the last 200 years this phenomenon has decreased twice as fast.
“Just a small action on Thwaites could produce a big response,” said lead researcher and USF marine geophysicist, Alastair Graham.
Thwaites' melting rate has also previously been studied. In 2020, it was recorded that the glacier broke faster than previously estimated.
Apart from Thwaites, at that time other glaciers were also studied, namely neighboring Pine Island. The glacier is also breaking down faster than before.
Researchers also say the ice cover protecting Thwaites is deteriorating rapidly. In research in December 2023, it was revealed that the ice would melt over the next five years.
