Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The 2022 Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry suddenly asked Western countries to learn from India. This is related to the facilitation and funding of innovation projects.
India itself is known to have the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC). This institution is in the spotlight of Morten Meldal.
According to him, Western countries can learn from India where BIRAC connects academia and industry. This is different from the West where each institution is independent so it is not well coordinated.
“BIRAC is an organization for innovation in India. I think it's quite impressive… to organize an umbrella organization that oversees all the different foundations,” he said.
“The entire innovation process is very important. It is facilitated by this organization and has a direct relationship with the government,” he explained.
“So I think this is an important new thing in India that we can learn from Western countries where funding agencies are independent entities, not well coordinated. Also, all the different regulations around it and so on. Uncoordinated. We can definitely learn of that here in India,” added Meldal.
In the government's 2024-2025 budget, Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman herself announced a new bio-manufacturing and bio-foundry scheme. This is expected to be a new innovation, a more environmentally friendly industrial alternative such as biodegradable polymers, bio-plastics, bio-pharmaceuticals and bio-agri inputs.
Meldel himself comes from Denmark. He was awarded the 2022 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the innovative development of 'click chemistry and bio-orthogonal chemistry'.
