Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The development of the Indonesian Capital City (IKN) has received attention from the United States (US) Space Agency, NASA. The agency released the results of the portrait of the development of the IKN captured by OLI-2 (Operational Land Imager-2) on Landsat 9 and OLI on Landsat 8.
In the image released by NASA's Earth Observatory, photos of IKN in April 2022 and February 2024 are visible. In the 2024 image, you can see that a lot of land in the forest has been cleared to be built into a main road.
IKN construction will begin in July 2022 in a forest and oil palm plantation area 30 kilometers inland from the Makassar Strait. This is done to answer the environmental challenges currently facing Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia.

The Jakarta metropolitan area is home to 30 million people and has grown rapidly in recent decades. Frequent flooding, heavy traffic, air pollution and lack of clean water are commonplace in Jakarta.
It is also rumored that Jakarta will sink in the next few years. Excessive groundwater extraction has contributed to land subsidence rates of up to 15 centimeters per year, and 40 percent of the city is now below sea level.
However, some researchers are concerned that changes in land use for IKN development could endanger forests and wildlife in the area.
The expanse of land and coastal waters being developed is rich in biodiversity and home to mangrove forests, proboscis monkeys and Irrawaddy dolphins.
Although the location has changed a lot over the past year and a half, the city is far from finished. Construction is planned to be completed in 2045.
