Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The story of the Abdurrachim family from Lumajang is proof of a wise saying. That “Life is a struggle and must be fought for” is true.
How could it not be, he who was originally humble changed his fate to become a billionaire thanks to endless hard work. The change in Abdurrachim's fate was widely reported in the media in Surabaya in June 1975.
At first, Abdurrachim was a homeless person who had no permanent place to live. Every day he lives in a shop window and works as a cigarette butt collector on the street.
On this basis, he was also arrested by the relevant authorities. In fact, he was placed in a shelter.
Daily Surabaya Post (2 June 1975) reported that the shelter contained homeless people like Abdurrachim so that they would not wander around and rest on the side of the road. In the future, the government will cover their lives.
Even so, Abdurrachim didn't want to just depend on it. During the day he still works as a cigarette butt collector.
Then in the evening he continued working as a frog hunter until the next day. During that time, Abdurrachim was not alone and was accompanied by his wife.
The money from the work is then collected and turned into capital. His business still revolves around buying and selling frogs.
“Mr Abdurrachim, apart from looking for frogs, also buys them from other frog hunters,” wrote the daily Surabaya Post.
Long story short, the work and business were successful. He then became a frog boss and became famous in Surabaya. Since then, Abdurrachim's life has slowly begun to change.
Every week, Abdurrachim always sends 3 quintals or 300 kg of frogs to Surabaya. The price of just one quintal can reach IDR 55,000. This means that for 7 days, he can hold IDR 165,000.
At that time, IDR 165,000 was a fantastic nominal value. One gram of gold only costs IDR 2,000. Meanwhile, petrol can be purchased for only IDR 57 per liter.
Abdurrachim's life from being stranded on the side of the road suddenly changed to become prosperous and honorable. On this basis, many people call him the new billionaire.
“This former homeless family already has wealth in the form of 3 hectares of rice fields, 1 motorbike, and is planning to buy a house for IDR 3,000,000,” said Surabaya Post.
Even so, wealth does not make him complacent and forget himself. Even though he has a lot of money, Abdurrachim still lives with other homeless people in a shelter.
