Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Minister of Defense (Menhan) and elected president of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the summit “Call for Action: Urgent Humanitarian Response for Gaza” regarding Gaza peace in Amman, Jordan, Tuesday local time.
During the meeting, Abbas expressed his gratitude to Prabowo for the Indonesian government for its commitment to defending Palestine. On the other hand, Prabowo promised that Indonesia would continue to fight until Palestine achieved true independence.
“Minister of Defense Prabowo emphasized Indonesia's commitment to always help more in the fight for Palestinian independence,” Prabowo said as quoted on the Ministry of Defense's official Instagram, quoted Thursday (13/6/2024).
Apart from meeting Abbas, Prabowo also met Jordanian King Abdullah. He explained that Amman had become one of the most active partners with Indonesia in fighting for the Palestinian people.
“The Indonesian government is currently also continuing to closely monitor the worsening developments in Gaza,” said Prabowo, as quoted in an official release.
Both also emphasized the importance of joint international efforts to coordinate and increase the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
“The number of fatalities and injuries continues to increase. Indonesia is very concerned about the current condition of the people in Gaza who are very vulnerable,” he added.
Defense Minister Prabowo also discussed peace in Gaza at the Shangri La Dialogue forum in Singapore last week. He said Indonesia was ready to send peacekeeping troops if ordered by the UN
Israel's attack on the Gaza region, Palestine, began on October 7 2023. In this action, Tel Aviv intends to destroy Gaza's ruling militia group, Hamas, which has attacked Israel and killed up to 1,200 residents.
In fact, Israel's counterattack has brought great damage and death to the Gaza area. In terms of casualties, around 37 thousand civilians were reported killed, with damage to housing infrastructure reaching 70%.
