Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban opened his voice on the order of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to apply for an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He said the request was “unacceptable”
According to Reuters, Chief of Staff to the Hungarian Prime Minister, Gergely Gulyas, on Thursday said the ICC's request to issue an arrest warrant against the Israeli prime minister was “unacceptable” and could not be implemented in Hungary.
Gergely explained that although Hungary ratified the Rome Statute with the international criminal court (ICC), it had never become part of the law in Hungary. This means that no court action can be taken in Hungary.
Previously, ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan, on Monday, said he had requested arrest warrants against the Israeli Prime Minister, his defense chief and three Hamas leaders for alleged war crimes. Although both parties criticized Khan's decision.
“This decision… is not a legal decision but a political decision, it is unacceptable and discredits the International Criminal Court,” said Gulyas, quoted Thursday (23/5/2024).
“Using the judiciary as a political tool is wrong, and we must not forget what led to what happened in Gaza, namely the cruel, dishonest and despicable terrorist attacks against Israel,” he said.
The European Union's chief diplomat, Josep Borrell, said both countries were bound to implement the court's decision. However, according to him, Khan's actions have shown political differences between European countries related to the conflict.
It is known that Orban is a long-standing ally of Netanyahu who supports Israel's right to self-defense.
Previously, the ICC officially submitted an arrest warrant against Netanyahu on charges of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity. Prosecutor Karim Khan said that not only Netanyahu, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant would also be on the wanted list.
Both are said to have committed acts that caused “starvation”. They also committed deliberate murder,” and “extermination.”
