Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia– Hezbollah launched one of its biggest rocket attacks on northern Israel since the start of the war in Gaza. Local time Wednesday, the group launched more than 200 projectiles in response to the killing of a senior Hezbollah commander in southeast Lebanon in an Israeli strike the previous night.
The attacks raised concerns that military confrontation between Israel and Hezbollah would escalate. Both of them repeatedly said that they were ready to fight.
Quote Al Jazeera, at least 215 rockets were fired from Lebanese territory as sirens sounded in dozens of communities in the north of the country. The military said many were intercepted but some landed, causing fires.
“Until this news was published, no fatalities had been reported,” wrote the page, quoted Thursday (13/6/2024).
Earlier, the Israeli military confirmed they had killed Taleb Abdullah as well as three other Hezbollah fighters in Tuesday's raid. This was later confirmed by a group close to Iran by saying Abdullah was killed in an airstrike in the city of Jouaiyya.
Abdullah, also known as Haji Abu Taleb, is the commander of a Hezbollah division covering the western sector of the front line between the border with Israel and the Litani River. He was the second figure to be killed since October 7, besides the deputy head of the elite Radwan unit, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon in January, Wissam al-Tawil.
So far, fighting on the ground has been limited to border skirmishes. But Hezbollah has attempted to challenge Israel's air superiority over Lebanese skies.
This week, they fired several missiles at Israeli warplanes in an attempt to repel them. The Israeli military confirmed the incident and said no damage was caused to its aircraft.
