Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The government has officially set the celebration of Eid al-Adha or 10 Zulhijjah 1445 Hijriah on Monday, June 17 2024. So, two days before the sacrificial holiday, Muslims are advised to fast Tarwiyah and Arafah.
The Tarwiyah fast was held on 8 Zulhijjah 1445 H. Meanwhile the Arafah fast was on 9 Zulhijjah 1445 H.
Quoting the website of the Indonesian Ministry of Religion, there are 10 practices which, if done from the start of Zulhijjah, will have the same reward as Hajj and Umrah. One of his practices is carrying out the Tarwiyah and Arafah fasts on 8 and 9 Zulhijjah.
In the Qur'an, Allah SWT has said:
وَيَذْكُرُوا اسْمَ اللَّهِ فِي أَيَّامٍ مَّعْلُومَاتٍ
Meaning: “And those who mention the name of Allah on the days that have become famous” (QS. Al-Hajj: 28)
The famous days in question are the first 10 days of the month of Zulhijjah. This is as explained in the hadith of Rasulullah SAW.
Meaning: “There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these days. Namely the first 10 days of the month of Zulhijjah. They (the companions) asked: “O Messenger of Allah, and neither is jihad in the way of Allah (more important from him)?”, he said: “And neither does jihad in the way of Allah (more important than him), except someone who struggles with himself and his wealth and then does not return with anything.” (HR Bukhari and Muslim)

Procedures for Fasting Tarwiyah and Arafah

2. Eat Sahur
It is preferable to eat sahur before dawn before Imsak.
3. Restraint
Carry out fasting by refraining from anything that can break the fast, such as eating, drinking and so on.
4. Take care of yourself
Not only do you restrain yourself, but also keep yourself from things that can cancel the reward of fasting, such as saying dirty words, gossiping about people, and all sinful acts as the Messenger of Allah said:
كَمْ مِنْ صَائِمٍ لَيْسَ لَهُ مِنْ صِيَامِهِ إِلَّا الْجُوعِ وَال ْعَطَشِ (رواه النسائي وابن ماجه من حديث أبي هريرة)
Meaning: “Many people who fast do not get anything from their fast except hunger and thirst” (HR an-Nasa'i and Ibn Majah from the hadith of Abu Hurairah ra). (Abul Fadl al-'Iraqi, al-Mughni 'an Hamil Asfâr, [Riyad: Maktabah Thabariyyah, 1414 H/1995 M], chapter I, p. 186).
5. Breaking the fast
For those who are fasting, it is best to hasten to break the fast, namely when sunset time arrives.
Tarwiyah and Arafah Fasting Schedule
After fasting Dzulhijjah, then fasting Tarwiyah and Arafah. The following is the fasting schedule for the 2 days before Eid al-Adha:
- 8 Dzulhijah 1445 H: 15 June 2024
- 9 Dzulhijah 1445 H: 16 June 2024
The Virtue of Tarwiyah Fasting
Tarwiyah fasting has many advantages, quoted from Detikcom. Here are some of them:
1. Erase One Year's Sins
Muslims who observe the Tarwiyah fast will have their sins erased for one year. Some scholars say that the hadith on which this is based is a dhaif (weak) hadith, because the history is not strong.
Nevertheless, the scholars recommend practicing this hadith in the context of fadha-ilul a'mal (deeds that gain priority). Moreover, fasting on the 8th is included in the first ten days of the month of Dzulhijjah, which is a special day.
Ibn Abbas RA said that Rasulullah SAW said:
“There is not one day when righteous deeds are more favored by Allah SWT than ten from the beginning of Dzulhijjah.” The companions asked, “O Rasulullah SAW, even compared to fighting in the way of Allah SWT?” He also said, “Even compared to fighting in the way of Allah SWT, unless someone comes out with his life and property, then he does not want any return for what he has sacrificed.” (HR. Bukhari).
2. Like Freeing a Thousand Slaves
People who observe the Tarwiyah fast will also receive advantages such as freeing a thousand slaves and giving alms to a thousand camels and a thousand horses used for jihad fi sabilillah.
The virtues of the Arafat fast
The virtues of fasting the Arafah fast are also numerous. Here are a number of the virtues:
1. Sin Melter
One of the virtues of fasting on Arafah is found in the following hadith of the Prophet:
Abu Qatadah RA said, “The Messenger of Allah SAW was once asked about fasting on the day of 'Arafah, then he answered that fasting washes away the sins of the year that has passed and the year to come.” (HR. Muslim).
2. Deliverance from Hellfire
Apart from being an atonement for sins, fasting on Arafah also has the benefit of being free from hellfire. Rasulullah SAW said:
“Among the days on which Allah SWT frees people from hell is the day of Arafah. He will approach them and then reveal their virtues to the angels. Then, Allah says, 'What do they want?' (HR. Muslim).
3. Prayer is answered
Another priority is that prayers are granted for those who carry them out. In general, the prayers of people who fast will be answered by Allah SWT, especially those who observe the Arafah fast. Rasulullah SAW said:
“The best prayer is the prayer on the day of 'Arafah. And, the best thing that I say, as was also said by the prophets before me, is the saying 'Laa ilaha illallah wahdahu laa syarikalah, lahul mulku walahul hamdu wa huwa 'ala kuli syai-in qadiir” (HR. Tirmidhi).
4. Like Freeing Two Thousand Slaves
Fasting Arafah is the same as freeing two thousand slaves and giving charity to two thousand camels and two hundred horses for jihad fi sabilillah.
That is the intention of fasting Tarwiyah and Arafah and the procedures for it. Hope it is useful
