Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The United Nations (UN) is taking steps to anticipate the risks of using Artificial Intelligence (AI). Namely by making a global resolution to be implemented in world countries.
The UN announced a non-binding resolution. The resolution asks countries to safeguard human rights, protect personal data and monitor AI risks. The United States (US) proposed this resolution. China and more than 120 countries are sponsors.
“Today all 193 members of the UN General Assembly spoke with one voice and together voted to regulate artificial intelligence rather than artificial intelligence governing us,” explained US Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, quoted from ReutersFriday (22/3/2024).
AI is said to be able to be used for negative things. Starting from disrupting the democratic process, increasing fraud or causing drastic job losses.
UN regulations also state that inappropriate use of AI can pose risks to human rights and fundamental human freedoms.
Since the rapid development of AI in the last two years, various countries have tried to create initiatives to regulate it. For example, Indonesia through a Circular Letter (SE) regarding AI.
Meanwhile, last November, the US, UK and several other countries launched the first international agreement to safely use AI from irresponsible parties. Apart from that, it also encourages companies to create safe AI systems.
The treaty had been adopted earlier by England. Followed by members of parliament who used it to monitor this technology this month.
In the US, the Biden government is urging lawmakers to adopt it. But the polarized local congress finds it difficult to make this happen.
