Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – A South Korean court sentenced one member to one year in prison and a two-year suspension K-pop boy band for pretending to have a mental disorder to avoid military service, Wednesday (17/1/2024)
Launching from The Korea Herald, the Seoul North District Court handed down a suspended sentence to the 32-year-old K-Pop idol. He was also required to carry out 80 hours of community service for violating the Military Service Law.
It was reported that the defendant had undergone physical examinations twice from the Military Manpower Administration, namely in 2011 and 2017. Both of them met the requirements to carry out mandatory military active duty.
However, this unidentified idol deliberately faked his psychological condition and gave wrong answers during the test so that the hospital diagnosed him with a mild mental disorder.
According to the results of the psychological examination, the K-Pop idol only had an IQ score of 60 so the doctor recommended treatment. However, because he didn't have any problems while preparing for his debut and carrying out activities as a member boy bandthe court ruled that he did not have a mental disability.
In its decision, the court stated that the idol had admitted his guilt, had no criminal record, and promised to fulfill his mandatory military duties.
According to The Korea Herald, the defendant, whose identity was withheld by the authorities, is a member boy band K-pop which debuted in 2018.
For information, according to South Korean law, all able-bodied men in South Korea aged 18 to 28 years are required to carry out military service for 18 months. If diagnosed with a mental disorder, a person is deemed unfit for active duty.
