Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Starlink satellite-based internet service officially operates in Indonesia. This raises questions about the competition that will occur between Starlink and local cellular operators.
Regarding this, Elon Musk once gave a message to global cellular operator companies. He said the Starlink business would not be able to compete with cellular services.
He conveyed this when Starlink launched six satellites under the name Direct-to-Cell. The service connects the satellite internet network directly to the user's cellphone.
Just like on land, the satellite will act like a BTS tower in space. Users can carry out activities as usual, such as sending messages, making telephone calls, and even surfing in cyberspace.
At the same time, Musk also tried to calm cellular network providers. He ensured that Starlink services did not compete with operator services.
Musk explained that the Direct-to-Cell service provides connectivity at any location on Earth. However, bandwidth support is only 7 MB per 'beam' or signal beam.
“So while this is a great solution for locations without cellular connectivity, [Direct-to-Cell] will not be able to compete with existing terrestrial cellular networks,” Musk said.
4G LTE devices can connect to this service. Users do not need to connect devices by adding additional accessories, firmware, or special applications.
“Direct-to-Cell can work with existing LTE cellphones anywhere you can see the sky,” wrote information on the official website of SpaceX, the company that provides the Starlink service.
According to the company, this mission will expand global connectivity. This includes removing 'dead zones' where the internet cannot be accessed.
