Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) revealed that the value of online gambling transactions in Indonesia continues to increase. The amount will reach IDR 327 trillion in 2023.
Who would have thought, this value would jump significantly, namely 213% from IDR 104.41 trillion in 2022. Historically, that number has even soared much higher.
In the last 5 years, online gambling transactions for Indonesian citizens have skyrocketed by 8,136.77% from 2018, which was “only” IDR 3.97 trillion.
PPATK also revealed that the online gambling players behind the hundreds of trillions in transaction figures consisted of 2.76 million users. As many as 2.19 million of them are low-income people with the profile of students, students, workers, farmers, housewives and private employees.
Meanwhile, in the first three months of 2024, the number of online gambling transactions for Indonesian citizens has reached IDR 100 million.
In eradicating this, the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kemenkominfo) together with the Financial Services Authority (OJK) are carrying out various efforts to prevent and eradicate online gambling.
Chairman of the OJK Board of Commissioners, Mahendra Siregar, said that currently his party has blocked 5,000 accounts from the beginning of the year until March 2024.
However, he admitted that these efforts were not enough to prevent online gambling activities.
“There are things that are not done domestically, across borders, there are also things that are not done through bank accounts. So there are those that need to be in-depth and trace bank accounts.
“This includes moving books and so on,” he said.
Therefore, according to him, it is necessary to carry out a comprehensive solution through coordination across ministries and institutions.
