Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Israeli researchers are exploring a crazy idea to make the Earth a little cooler. The idea is to put a giant 'umbrella' into space and block sunlight from reaching Earth.
The size of the umbrella is very large, namely the area of Argentina is around 1 million square miles or 2.5 million square kilometers. Research leader Yoram Rozen of the Asher Space Research Institute and director of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology said he had thought about the problem of umbrella sizes being too large.
One way is by sending a smaller rocket to launch into space. “We can show the world, “Look, there is a solution that works, scale it to the required size,” said Rozen, quoted from Yahoo, Thursday (8/2/2024).
He says the Technion won't save the Earth. But also ensure that this can be done.
Rozen and his team are currently looking for funds to build the prototype. The amount reached US$10 million and US$20 million or Rp. 157.3 billion to Rp. 314.7 billion.
The idea of blocking sunlight or that which comes from outer space has actually been carried out by several studies. For example, a team of scientists from Harvard and the University of Utah explored the idea of placing dust at the Langrange point between the Sun and Earth.
Meanwhile, other research suggests placing an umbrella on an asteroid. It is hoped that similar effects will also be felt by Earth's inhabitants.
However, installing a light barrier to Earth has also been criticized by many people. For example, a number of critics in the New York Times said the idea was very expensive and unrealistic, citing increasingly rapid global warming.
On the other hand, supporters of the idea say they should leave no stone unturned in finding solutions to climate change.
