Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Many beliefs say that involving parents in various activities can bring blessings. If you don't believe it, then the story of Kate Pawloski can be an example.
How could it not be, Kate successfully built a business to a profit of US$ 1.6 million or Rp25 billion thanks to inviting her mother to start a business. How is the story?
This story began in 2010. At that time, Kate had the status of fresh graduate Psychology graduates choose to do business rather than work.
For him, doing business can give him the freedom to do anything. Because, when he was an intern he couldn't feel that.
However, he realized that he could not do many things alone. Instead of inviting other people to do business, he chose to involve his mother, Ann Lightfoot, to start a home business together.
Inviting her mother made Kate not have to worry about other people because they already trusted and knew each other.
Initially, the business she did was selling used jewelry. Unexpectedly, the sales immediately sold well and made her build a bigger business called Done & Done Home in 2012.
To Insiderquoted Tuesday (6/5/2024), the business is engaged in house cleaning services. This idea came about thanks to a suggestion from a friend who often heard other people's complaints about house cleanliness.
“An interior designer friend told us about a client who had so much stuff in her home that she was having trouble sorting through it during the renovation,” says Kate.
When starting a business, he realized that inviting his mother to start a business was a blessing. Because, both of them have complementary skills that are difficult to get if you do business with other people.
Even if it is possible, compatibility will take a long time to build.
In business, Kate is a figure who is good at using technology to do business. She manages design plans to set profit proportions. In addition, she also manages the placement of advertisements and promotions via social media.
Meanwhile, her mother is good at negotiating. She is in charge of finding and inviting clients to use Done & Done Home services.
“I work 30-40 hours a week and mostly focus on finance and marketing. My mom still oversees all the clients and sales,” she said.
When asked if there was a potential for business failure because of involving family, he said so far there was none. In fact, he repeatedly emphasized that doing business with one's own parents brings advantages. He can share household chores and business affairs easily because his business partners understand each other.
“My mum and I have always been close and very open about communicating our needs to each other, so that helps,” Kate said.
It all paid off in the end. In 2023, Kate revealed the profits she made from her business reaching US$ 1.6 million or Rp25 billion. The amount is far above his income when working with other people. And it was only possible thanks to business cooperation with his own parents.
Now, her business is not only taking care of the house, but also starting to expand into providing online courses. All of that is done of course with her mother.
