Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The spread of Islam also reached Vietnam. The era of Islam when it entered Vietnam (formerly called Champa) in the 9th century and was immediately accepted by the public and royal officials. Since then, Islam in Vietnam has continued to develop.
Referring to the research “The Influence of Hinduism Toward Bani Islam” (2018), Islamic religious teachings in Vietnam are now divided into two. First, the growing Muslim community in big cities. This community adheres to the Al-Quran and Hadith. Meanwhile, the Cham Muslim community, which is very unique, is also controversial.
Their uniqueness lies in the fact that they live and carry out their practices as Muslims not based on the Koran, Hadith and the pillars of the Islamic Faith. In other words, they live based on the customs and customs that occur in their environment.
During the current situation or the holy month of Ramadan, for example. Quoting Ba Trung's research entitled “Bani Islam Cham in Vietnam” (2008), they do not observe fasting like Muslims throughout the world.
They are of the view that Ramadan or as they call it “Ramuwan” is not a month of fasting, but only a month of training for new religious leaders, preparation for death, and purification.
During the month of Ramadan, families of Cham Muslims deliver offerings in the form of trays of food to religious leaders who come to the mosque. The aim is to show their sincerity to Allah.
While in the mosque, these religious leaders do a kind of meditation. They did not speak, eat, or drink for three days. If this period has passed, then they will carry out da'wah activities in the mosque for 15 days in the month of Ramadan, which according to their version is not 30 days, but 15 days.
Apart from the month of Ramadan, there is another striking difference between Cham Muslims and Muslims in general, namely prayer. As an obligation in Islamic practice, Cham Islam does not perform prayers.
Still referring to the research “The Influence of Hinduism Toward Islam Bani” (2018), followers of Cham Islam do not pray five times a day, but only offer Friday prayers. They are of the view that the obligation to perform prayers can be delegated through a representative called Acar.
It is this pickle that then “entrusts” prayers from his family so that life in this world and the afterlife will be good. Then, why is Cham Islam different from teachings in general?
Some say the difference is because they are influenced by Hindu and Buddhist teachings. However, a more logical reason seems to be found in Jay Willoughby's research entitled “The Cham Muslims of Vietnam”.
In his presentation, it was discovered that the different teachings were caused because the process of Islamization of Islamic teachings was interrupted and incomplete. So, when the Islamization process was taking place among the aritocracy of the Kingdom of Champa suddenly fighting broke out.
When the fighting occurred, the process of spreading Islamic da'wah among the people of Champa was interrupted, resulting in the Islamic teachings reaching the population being incomplete.
The disconnection from this teaching became even worse after Champa's political isolation made them, especially Muslims in the Phan Rang and Phang Ri areas, left behind by the process and development of the Islamization of the Malay world.
Over time, this halted process gave birth to the Champ Muslim community, which now numbers 40,000 and is spread across 12 provinces in Vietnam. However, the majority of these numbers are concentrated at the beginning of their distribution, namely Phan Rang and Phang Ri.
As a result of these different teachings, they are called marginalized people. They are sometimes ostracized. However, there are quite a few ulama who try to straighten out the teachings of Cham Islam in accordance with general teachings.
