Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Apple boss admitted that many iPhone users are addicted to looking at the screen for too long. This was conveyed by Apple CEO Tim Cook in an interview with GQ.
Cook was asked by a journalist to comment on the tendency of modern society to constantly look at cellphone screens and this affects their mental condition.
“My philosophy is, if you look at a screen longer than you make eye contact with another human being, there is something wrong with you,” Cook said in the interview, quoted on Sunday (14/04/2024).
He then reminded again that the iPhone has a 'Screen Time' feature which can show the duration of the user's use of the cellphone. Cook said this feature was deliberately created so that users are aware of whether their relationship with their cellphone is still within normal limits or is it dangerous.
“I am very disciplined in checking the Screen Time report to find out whether I am spending too long in front of the cellphone,” he said.
For generations who were not born in the digital era, perhaps giving up their addiction to cellphones is easier. However, for the generation that was born and is directly familiar with the digital world, of course this is more difficult.
The reason is, the boundaries between the digital world and the real world seem to be thinner because almost all interactions and information searches are carried out online.
Cook also admitted this. “Today's children were born in the digital era. I think it is important to create clear boundaries for them,” he said.
Cook said that the main essence of technology is to help humans do what they could not do before. Apart from that, learning things that were previously inaccessible.
“The role of technology is limited to that. It's a shame if people spend too much time in front of their cellphones,” he concluded.
